Frequently found hanging out in hallways and staircases, wall sconces are found more and more in living rooms, bedrooms and even bathrooms.  Unsurprisingly, a wall sconce is a light that mounts to a wall (either hard wired or with a plug-in cord) and feature a shade or diffuser to soften the light.  What’s unique about the Quoizel wall sconces is the attention to detail in ever facet of design.  If you’re ready for a higher quality wall light, you’re ready for a Quoizel wall sconce.

Wall sconces are typically made up of three basic pieces, a backplate, arms and shades.

Backplate:  The (usually flat) piece that mounts to the wall.  Backplates not only function as wall anchors, but the style and details afforded them enhance the overall fixture.  Since the backplate is directly at lamp height, it also serves to reflect light back into the room.

Arm(s):  Extending from the backplate, the sconce arm (or arms) support the light fixture a short distance from the backplate.  Some arms are short, stubby, and primarily decorative while others can bend, fold or retract to allow the light to be positioned in different locations.

Shade(s):  Shades aren’t only made of cloth, glass shades are also used on wall sconces to amplify or spread the light over a larger area.  Frosted glass or cloth shades diffuse the light, focusing it down to create a more relaxed atmosphere.

When buying sconces, pay close attention to the direction that the sconce can be installed… some sconces are shown with the primary light shining up (uplighting), while others shine down (downlighting).  Don’t assume that the sconce you’re interested in can be mounted in either direction – check the specifications to make sure it’ll work for you.

Bathrooms are an amazing place to use wall sconces – placed on either side of a bathroom mirror, they provide all the ambient (read: general) and task lighting you need and are arguably more attractive than the bar of lights over a bathroom mirror.  Once thing to watch out for, though… when selecting wall sconces (or any lights really) for use in a bathroom, make sure that they are damp rated or wet rated.  Water doesn’t play well with electricity, so keeping water out of your electrical fixtures is a must.
